The Rays introduced their new outfielder Matt Joyce today. rays VP Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon praised him on his talent and work ethic. Born and raised in Tampa, he might be the only player to make the Majors as a Tampa Bay "Devil" Rays fan.
The Rays also talked to free agent pitcher Joe Nelson, who pitched well last year with the Florida Marlins and surprisingly didn't get re-signed.
Other news in the Majors:
- Baltimore Orioles official signed free agent shortstop Cesar Izturis to a two year deal. Izturis is a great defensive shortstop and can steal some bases. A great move for the Orioles who have big holes in certain positions and a terrible pitching staff. The Orioles are also talking to starting pitchers Tim Redding and Carl Pavano. The Orioles need to get anybody they can to fill the bullpen and rotation.
- The Cubs sign former Rays outfielder Joey Gathright to a one year $800,000 dollar contract. A speed-tool player, he will be the fifth outfielder for the Cubs, primarily being used for pinch-hitting, pinch-running, and double switches.
